Open estuary mouths where tidal flows now occur once again are
producing some great opportunities for those starting out through to
the more experienced angler whether fishing by lure or with fresh bait.
The likes of the Bega River, Wallaga Lake, and Cuttagee to name a few
are filled with bait including prawns, garfish, whitebait, mullet and
more .
Wallaga Lake for example has plenty of small to medium prawns close to
the lakes edges whilst many of the bays and open water are well covered
by small garfish cruising the surface and large schools of mullet in
between.
Bega River has bream around in good numbers and tailor are about as
well. Flathead are more prolific and sessions of 10 or more fish are
certainly achievable by most . They are smaller in size but you will
get enough legal size fish to take home for dinner.
Outside fishing at Bermagui has been very productive over the last few
weeks with good catches of snapper up to 4kgs taken at the 4 and 6 mile
reefs and sand flathead of good size continue to hold off at Camel
Rock in 30-35 m of water.
However the report yesterday was the water at Bermagui was a cold 15
degrees and green and the fishing has died off considerably.
Tathra has good reports as well with flathead in numbers being taken
off Nelsons, out straight out the front in 40m of water.
Tathra wharf is still productive with plenty of squid taken as well as
your usual bait fish.
Our beaches are producing some healthy bream for those fishing light on
the surf while salmon remain a common capture . There are a few nice
tailor being landed on spinning gear from the rocks and to those bait
fishing off the beach.
Offshore fishing has been dominated by bluefin tuna over June and July
with captures up to 130kg being taken and it was not uncommon with some
boats having multiple hookups in one outing.
